WHEN YOUR CHILD GETS A FEVER!

Should I call the doctor?  Here's what you need to know!

YOU DON'T HAVE TO TREAT IT.  If your child has a fever and is drinking lots of fluids and seems happy, consider skipping the meds.  The main reason for giving medication is for comfort and to avoid dehydration.

WHEN IT'S TIME TO TREAT A FEVER. - Ibuprofen and acetaminophen work equally as well in bringing down a fever.  Sometimes it can be beneficial to alternate them as each one works differently to bring down a fever.  ONLY DO THIS UNDER THE DIRECTION OF YOUR DOCTOR.

MAIN CONCERN.  Dehydration-  If your child's temperature is elevated, make sure he or she is getting plenty of fluids (fruits, ice pops and ice cream)  To figure out if your child is headed for dehydration, ask yourself if she is her usual self or kind of droopy.  Are her lips a bit dry?  If it's a baby, check the diaper to see if she has had a wet diaper in the last six hours.
