Sleep is broken down in four main stages.  When you first close your eyes and fall asleep, your brain enters the first sleep stage.  From here, your brain waves get longer and slower as your drift deeper into sleep.  Once you have reached the REM sleep, the final sleep stage, your brain wave activity will increase again as you begin to dream.

As we get older, most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep each night to get all of the benefits a good night's sleep has to offer.  Some people have a hard time falling asleep or staying asleep and there can be a number of reasons why this happens.  

Some ways to prepare yourself for a good night's sleep include trying to avoid the following:  caffeine, alcohol, foods that might upset your digestion, nicotine, and even bright lights within a few hours of going to bed.  It is also important to set up a regular bedtime and waking time and sticking to those times even on weekends.  Getting in a regular bedtime routine will help signal your body and brain that it is almost time to sleep.
